About

fred

I grabbed my first camera at the age of 14 and received my first black and white lab for my 15th birthday.

Since then the magic has always been there.

I believe that photography is not about cold technical perfection but about freezing a moment in time and trying to render it as close as possible, with the photographer subjective point of view.

I started as a freelance photographer in 1992 after learning with two great photographers, one taught me the lab, the other how to observe and capture, balance the light, and always seek the best shot : Emiel Speltdoorn and Phillip McCordall.

I turned away for a while and pursued a career in digital communication, mainly because back then, I became unsatisfied with my work in commercial advertising photography and with the first digital cameras, the quality decreased dramatically.

But most of all, I wanted to focus on my Family.

Although, I never stopped shooting for pleasure, and my new field of work allowed me to keep up with the new imaging technologies.

Come 2009.

My feeling is that the digital format is slowly reaching maturity, with the new generation of software and cameras, it is possible to work with a decent level of quality again, photographers regain more control on the process, and we now have real ‘digital labs’ for the workflow.

Time to shoot again !

If you are interested in what gear I use, report to the links page where you will find my suppliers, I use professional equipment, and I carry enough gear to shoot on location or in studio (at least my banker thinks so), comprising of a mobile studio if needed, enabling me to set up anywhere.

Of course since I am a Nikonian at heart, a D3 is at the center of it all, but you should not worry about the gear, worry about the results.

“A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion ….

All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth.”
